Study questions for love lyrics readings.

For possible quiz be prepared to answer either question 3 or 4 (instructor will choose which to answer if there is a quiz)

1. When we consider poetry we can talk about voicing and speakers. Who is speaking in the poems? How can you distinguish between speakers?

2. The poems end with a few lines that stand out from the rest of the poem. How would you characterize these lines? How do they stand out?

3. What is love like in these poems? What is love and what does it do to people? Pick one poem on which to focus your essay.

4. What sorts of images appear in these poems? What do you find to be the most striking images and metaphors? Pick one image or series of images and discuss it in relation to the rest of the poem.

5. Before looking at today’s reading did you know of any interconnections between Arabic literature and European literature? Now that you’ve seen some examples can you thnk of any other possible areas of influence? How do you think opening up new areas of influence for study might influence the way we think about literature? What might the larger ramifications of such study be?
